After his debut cover, JCL produced more Post covers than any other illustrator, including Norman Rockwell. In deference to JCL, Rockwell ceased painting for the Post one short of surpassing the number JCL produced. JCL continued periodically painting erotic cover and ad drawings throughout his career. Until the 1990's JCL was discussed principally as the originator of the popular images of Santa Claus and the New Year's baby which Americans still associate with two major American holidays. Few know, however, that it was Leyendecker permanently wired these images into their brains. His images of Gatsbyesque couples in the 1920s and 1930s have also retained their popularity. Discussions of his work have almost always ignored its most essential character, its gay sensibility.
