Leyendecker met Beach in 1903, when the 18 year old model from Cleveland first posed for him. Their devoted relationship would last over the next forty-nine years with Beach functioning as Leyendecker's lover, model, cook and business manager. Little is known about their life together due to their living quietly with few servants and maintaining a strict, almost secretive, privacy. (lonestarverve.com) J.C. After his debut cover, JCL produced more Post covers than any other illustrator, including Norman Rockwell. In deference to JCL, Rockwell ceased painting for the Post one short of surpassing the number JCL produced. JCL continued periodically painting erotic cover and ad drawings throughout his career. Until the 1990's JCL was discussed principally as the originator of the popular images of Santa Claus and the New Year's baby which Americans still associate with two major American holidays. Few know, however, that it was Leyendecker permanently wired these images into their brains. His images of Gatsbyesque couples in the 1920s and 1930s have also retained their popularity. Discussions of his work have almost always ignored its most essential character, its gay sensibility. (www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/2305/leybiog.html)

by Una Troubridge
This is the only sculpted portrait of Nijinsky done from life. It perfectly captures Nijinsky's exotic, other-worldly performance as the Faun. Although a few copies were made, this is the original plaster cast made by Una Troubridge. No-one knew that the original cast existed until 1954 when English-born Lydia Sokolova, who had been one of Diaghilev's leading dancers, passed a London antique shop and saw a head marked 'From the Temple of Mithras'10/- (50p) (the Temple had just been discovered and was being excavated). She recognised it and bought it. It was the lost original of Troubridge's sculpture. Created: 1912 - (www.peopleplayuk.org.uk) <
