by Una Troubridge
This is the only sculpted portrait of Nijinsky done from life. It perfectly captures Nijinsky's exotic, other-worldly performance as the Faun. Although a few copies were made, this is the original plaster cast made by Una Troubridge. No-one knew that the original cast existed until 1954 when English-born Lydia Sokolova, who had been one of Diaghilev's leading dancers, passed a London antique shop and saw a head marked 'From the Temple of Mithras'10/- (50p) (the Temple had just been discovered and was being excavated). She recognised it and bought it. It was the lost original of Troubridge's sculpture. Created: 1912 - (www.peopleplayuk.org.uk) <
